The story is based on https://forward.com/culture/458742/netflix-the-queens-gambit-beth-harmon-susan-polgar-chess-championship/ this book by the real Beth Harmon
My favorite cinematic tool was the visual tool they used to show how the human brain can do abstraction--and how other's can physically see that abstraction sometimes in faces. Chess is a super psychological game as well, because of this. You gotta have a chess face. But Harmon's ultimate chess face was looking seriously at the ceiling, lol. Plus it was cool just to see that image of the pieces moving upside down mirrored on the ceiling.
