Hey there y'all! The Selection Committee is trying something a little different. We want to go old, old, like, really old school with one of these, so we thought it'd be fun to spoil the field for the 1927 and give you three weeks to become familiar with the participants!

Some familiar faces will be there: Hitchcock, Murnau, Eisenstein, Fritz Lang, Josef von Sternberg, and Buster Keaton are all represented

@derek What a fun group!

I've seen as many of these as I have, like, the 2019 movie bowl, that can't be good right?

@derek If you can dig up archive.org youstubes etc links that'd be really useful.

@derek maybe you want to add this one. it's from 1927, Germaine Dulac is the director, and it's one of my favourite movies ever youtu.be/eJduxQHEghU

Metropolis is great, at very least aesthetically, although the plot is kinda mid. Fucking beautiful movie

@derek

Wow. I've only seen a couple of these.

How do y'all watch these for the "movie bowls"?

And as is tradition, here is the field for the 1927 #MovieBowl

@TerryHancock there isn't really a formal way we do it, people just kind of watch what they like as it comes up; I'm doing this for 1927 just because I suspect people will just have seen way fewer of them, so it's kind of a heads up

I guess with a lot of these older films, you can probably find them on YouTube, now. I've found a few old films that way.

I presume most of these are silent films? I know Metropolis is, and The Jazz Singer was one of the first films with any sync sound, IIRC.

@TerryHancock yup, I'm like 99% sure these are all silents save The Jazz Singer

I personally love the Giorgio Moroder version of Metropolis, with the 80s pop soundtrack. Not the most complete version of the original film anymore, but I found the combination of MTV music-video era music with 20s telegraphic over-acting to be very enjoyable to watch!

@TerryHancock @derek I’ve managed to source most of this slate online, many through legal means. Looking forward to watching them!
