My grandpa sings a song on this called "my foot on the rock" and it's basically the southern gospel equivalent of saying "fuck off, satan!!"
Soderbergh discussion, note
I have to go back to work but I might pick this up later. there is so much more I could get into and Soderbergh's Cinema of Process is just one facet of his movies
Soderbergh discussion, pt 6
in contrasting the failure of the Bolivian revolution with the success of the Cuban one, and giving each equal time, he showcases the perfect storm that made the Cuban revolution so successful. he finds something to learn and take away from both the process of success and the process of failure and as a filmmaker whose had his share of both this is where his filmmaking gets personal. these movies are as much about his craft as they are about their subjects.
Soderbergh discussion, pt 5
however Che Part 2 is where he does something interesting. where in part 1 he shows the process of a successful revolution in part 2, about the attempted Bolivian revolution, he shows the process of a revolution that fails. where part one was full of vibrant greens, part 2 is covered in muted blues. plot wise he has part 2 follow a similar trajectory as part one, but where part one showed successful plans, 2 shows those same ones backfiring.
Soderbergh discussion, pt 4
one of my favorite examples of this is his two part masterpiece Che. A movie about Che Guevara could easily be a criticism or a hagiography but in the hands of Soderbergh it's something far more interesting. in Part he shows the Cuban revolution but focuses on the day to day. what does it look like to run a successful revolution. it's less about the why of revolution (something you could find in plenty of other movies) and instead about the how.
Soderbergh discussion, pt 3
his films are all about process. his favorite thing to show is someone who is very good at their job doing their job very well. Think the thieves of the Oceans movies and Logan Lucky, the government beauracrats of Contagion (maybe the only disaster movie that is pro government and cooperation over the heroic lone savior) and even the strippers of Magic Mike. these are people good at what they do and his main joy is showing you that (while telling a good story)
Soderbergh discussion, pt 2
he's done classics such as Sex Lies and Videotape, Out of Sight, Ocean's 11-13, Traffic, Erin Brockovich, and Magic Mike. And personal favorites like King of the Hill, The Limey, the Solaris remake, Che, Contagion and most recently Unsane.
he hops from genre and tone as though staying with one too long may be harmful to his health and yet most his movies contain a very specific through line that show the personal nature of his work.
Soderbergh discussion, pt 1
while being a filmmaker most people agree is great he's very rarely mentioned as being someone's favorite. he's not flashy, he doesn't feel the need to put himself front and center and his work is often very much not personal (although I will argue it's personal in a way people don't think about)
Bernardo Bertolucci, discussion of rape
it had been excused for so long and it's an example of the auteur theory at its worst. we excuse it because he was an important filmmaker who must have his vision be true. and it's total bullshit. it's an excuse for powerful men to get their own way for the sake of their "art" at the expense of others, especially women. I'm glad he's dead and I wish it had happened way way way sooner.
Bernardo Bertolucci, discussion of rape
Bertolucci died today. he's being honored as an incredible filmmaker, and he was truly a great talent but I find it impossible to praise him or honor him. In his iconic 1972 film Last Tango in Paris he filmed a scene where Marlon Brando's character rape Maria Schneider's. to get as real an emotion from Schneider as possible he had Brando assault her without telling her thos was happening to. the look of terror on her face is real because the act was real.
